Kojima Yoshio’s Bank Statement

Have you ever watched Japanese tv and wondered, “How much does THAT guy make?”

Well, here’s one example of a guy:

This is Yoshio Kojima, one of the big strange character type comedians going around. I think he’ll have more staying power than the others because he’s a smart guy (Waseda University grad) and there’s more to his jokes than just the bit he does here. He’s begun appearing on more and more quiz shows and other variety shows in normal clothing.

In the videos above you can see him being introduced by the comedy pair 99 who have a great show on Saturdays called Mecha-Ike. They have a good irreverant style, but maybe I’ll write about them another day.
So what does the guy in the fake Speedos make? He showed the bankbook from one of his bank accounts on tv recently.

On the show they said he sends about 300,000 yen (US$3,000) home to his mother every month and occasionally sends her 10,000,000 yen (US$100,000). They mentioned that on this particular bank statement there was a payment of over 10,000,000 yen listed. This was conjectured to be from book sales or cell phone ring downloads.

  1. Interesting fact that he sends his mother home Y300,000 each month, and a nice little topic you’ve touched on. I suppose, compared to a lot of Western celebrities and comedians, he doesn’t seem to pull in that much. Do you know if that Y10,000,000 payment was a one-time payment or was it going to be a regular income of that amount?

To be honest though, he could be paid Y10 and I’d still think it was too much for what he does!
