Japanese Media Shocked By Maki Goto’s Dyed Hair at Funeral

The Japanese media tried to make a big story bigger this weekend by complaining about the way Maki Goto wore her hair to her mother’s funeral. Her mother died this week in a fall from her apartment balcony in a suspected suicide.

Maki Goto showed up with her hair brown. The media responded with outrage. Cooler heads on the internet bulletin boards however, pointed out that it would be even stranger if Goto, who most often wears her hair dyed, had immediately taken a trip to the beautician upon hearing of her mother’s death.

More of a funeral fashion faux-pas was committed by former Morning Musume member Nozomi Tsuji who seemed to be thinking a little more about fashion and the photo-op than her grieving bandmate.

Tsuji wore a pronounced black bow on top of her head and a very short skirt as can be seen in the video below.

The video below is a long news report describing the events and location of the death. Including a woman who reported hearing Tokiko Goto speak of wanting to die. Much of the footage is repeated over the 10 minute recording (including several showings of Maki Goto’s arrival at the funeral). Former Morning Musume members Nozomi Tsuji, Natsumi Abe, Yuko Nakazawa, Kaori Iida, and Kei Yasuda can be seen arriving after the 7 minute mark in the video below.

  2. A bit pathetic really, but not so surprising of the media who always adopt a “holier-than-thou” standpoint, especially when it comes to tarento.

Am going to assume the media didn’t really care about the short skirt on Tsuji’s head, but focused right on Goto.

  3. I sometimes think the media in Japan is a bit out of touch with who they should be targeting with their marketing ploys (which I consider this kind of criticism of Goto to be)… one group of people with a lot of spendable income are the female unmarried twenty-somethings who work hard, live at home, and spend a lot of money. This is the same group that identifies with someone like Maki Goto. She did everything else right, the bow and so on.

People are commenting about how Tsuji came dressed, but it’s also about using a former bandmate’s mother’s funeral as a media event.

It’s easy to forget that these are people though, and Goto just lost her mother, probably a suicide from the top of the apartment building Goto had built for her. I remember when she was what 12? and tried out for Morning Musume back when they were relevant. She blew away the audition, and come to think of it, had dyed hair then too so obviously her mom wouldn’t mind.

  4. Very true Havocguy. It’s good that they came out and showed their respect like that. The bottom line is what a tragedy it is when anyone commits suicide. It happens way way too often here in Japan.

  5. My love my passed away… The most important thing to do is going to make an appointment and dye my hair black???!!!

Give the gal a break. She lost both her parents and have a good for nothing brother.
