Two Guys Punch and Cut Girl That Ignored Them

I really am looking for positive news to write about but this kind of randomly violent crime just keeps jumping out at me.

If you’ve been to Osaka, you probably know the big Hep Five mall (with the big Ferris Wheel on top). At the North entrance to Hep Five, two guys approached a girl in an attempt to do “nampa” or picking up a girl you don’t know on the street.

The girl was a 21 year old nail artist. The men were between the ages of 25 and 30. One, the one that cut the girl, was slightly overweight wearing a baseball cap, sunglasses, and a white jacket. The other one was wearing an orange checked shirt.

When the girl ignored the guys, they punched her two or three times and then one of them took out a 10cm bladed object and cut her left cheek.

A girl at the scene was interviewed as having said that guys often try to pick girls up near Hep Five, but because of the number of people around she didn’t think it would ever be dangerous to turn them down.

  1. I’ve only been in Japan a tad under 5 years, but it does seem that in the past 18 months to 2 years that society here has been in a downward spiral, with more violent crimes occurring (although maybe not being reported in the news as things like gyoza from China and Kim Jong Il dominate the front pages).

  2. There’s a weird mix of the classic “gyaku-gire” thing where if someone gets angry at you for doing something wrong you get angry back at them… plus a lot of (un)suppressed anger… and a complete lack of concern for the consequences of violent acts.

By far the scariest trend seems to be people killing people so that they can get the death penalty. They always make a comment that they “didn’t care who they killed”, but it always seems to be a child or elderly person.

  3. Just a thought that occurred to me later, but since most of the bachelor guys I know don’t carry 10cm blades with them when they go to meet girls… it’s entirely possible that this girl got off easy. I hope the police are looking at other incidents in the Osaka area that night. Seems like a couple of guys that were not necessarily looking for their soulmates there.
