High School Basketball Coach Sentenced to 11 Years For Sexual Assault on Students

Takaaki Obara, a 57 year old high school basketball coach was convicted of raping a member of the girls’ basketball at a hotel when the club was away for a tournament. He was also convicted of punching members of the team in another hotel.

The english story on Mainichi points out that he was “highly regarded for his ability to produce strong teams”.

I’m putting this in the “bad teacher” category, although Obara is actually a coach paid to come in and help develop the team… not actually a teacher at the school.

I often hear horror stories about these “strong” coaches. Often they have ulterior motives for dedicating so much time to students. Hopefully the majority are sincere and love the sport they’re coaching.
