If you watch wacky Japanese tv, you may have seen Egashira 2:50. Often voted as the most despised tv personality in Japan. He definitely stretches the line between what you can and can’t do on tv and leaves viewers (and I’m sure co-stars and producers) open mouthed.
Egashira 2:50 often appears and is put down on the Mecha Ike tv show (probably the best of the Japanese comedy skit shows in my humble opinion). They bring him on the show with the promise that he’ll become a regular only to shoot him down after he goes nuts on screen.
The other context you need to understand this video is that the music comes from the theme song to Hayao Miyazaki’s most recent movie “Ponyo on a Cliff” (called Gake no Ue no Ponyo in Japan).
The theme song is extremely popular as sung by a young girl and an older guy in a tuxedo. There’s some interesting backstory to the making of this song, but that’s not for this blog post.
This post is about Egashira 2:50.
Mecha Ike created a montage of his antics and set it to the theme of Ponyo on a Cliff with new lyrics. Enjoy.
Update: the video had been deleted, but this smaller somewhat lower quality version remains.
