Japan’s Top News Stories of 2008 in a Rap Video

This is an awesome video. Basically it’s a rap video about the top news stories of 2008.

You can consider it a little pop quiz of your Japanese news, pop culture, and current events knowledge. How many of the images or stories in this do you remember?

Enjoy this trip in the time machine courtesy of Hibiki from Knockout Records.

If there are any references you don’t get, feel free to ask in the comments!

Anyway, enjoy!

  1. Sounds crazy but I can’t see at work. Can I expect to see some rapping about the Akihabara stabbings and the boy who went to the koban with his mother’s head in a sports bag?

  2. No, nothing about that stabbing, or the other one, or the kid that killed his parents with an axe… or the other one.

Some good pop culture stuff though, the gyoza thing, the unagi thing, the industrial (to be made into glue) rice knowingly sold as rice for consumption. There is the great Fukuda line “anata to wa chigaundesu”, some of the character comedians that fell off the face of the earth… and other stories that were big here.
