Top 5 Japan McDonald’s Menu Items

A recent poll on career website Cobs Online has rated the most popular items on the McDonald’s menu in Japan.

While I am partial to the double cheeseburger which is not a seasonal item in Japan, here are the top 5 as voted on Cobs.

5. Filet-o-Fish with 5.1% of the votes.

4. McShake with 5.3% of the votes.

3. Cheeseburger with 7.3% of the votes.

2. Teriyaki Burger with 13.7% of the votes.

1. French Fries with 14.1% of the votes.

Actually the item that surprised me most here is the Teriyaki Burger. Contrary to popular belief, “teriyaki” is not a ubiquitous thing in Japan. In fact, it’s most common as a sauce for basting and cooking fish or chicken, but you don’t really see it as much as someone coming from another country might think.

Cheeseburgers are standard, and I’ve been at many friends homes when someone went out to buy some McDonald’s and came home with a bag full cheeseburgers and another bag full of fries.

It was a very Japanese way to do it, not asking anyone for individual orders, but just buying enough of generally acceptable items to be sure everyone was included.

Depending on when one travels to Japan, there are a lot of specialty items that are worth trying, and may even be considered as Japanese as sushi itself.

Right now you can find the Big America Texas Burger, at other times of the year there are sandwiches with various kinds of cutlets and sauces, shrimp fritter inspired sandwiches, and the popular Tsukimi Burger which has a fried egg on top of the burger.
