Baobab Pepsi – The Newest Experiment in Colas

Pepsi has come out with it’s newest entry into the carbonated beverage pool with “Baobab” Pepsi. To be honest, I haven’t had this yet, and can’t imagine what the flavor might be. The baobab tree fruit is one of the new kids on the block in terms of flavors (off the African continent, that is) and is purported to be a good flavor for use in smoothies. I’ve heard it described as something close to tamarinds or grapefruits. It’s a citrus fruit so the Baobab fruit flavored Pepsi may end up being as big a hit as some of the lemon-lime type sodas.

I’ve tried the Shiso Pepsi (Green Perilla), the Azuki Pepsi, and was surprised to say that it was worth drinking. I only made it through a few sips of the Cucumber Pepsi, or the Ice Cucumber Pepsi before deciding to share the experience with others. It wasn’t bad at all, but requires a true love of the unadulterated, unseasoned, naked flavor of cucumber juice… carbonated.

Well, Baobab is out with it’s Africa-themed bottle. If anyone has the chance to try it, please enlighten us with the comments and feel free to link to your own review if you’ve got one.

Sounds good. I am not a big fan of shiso and the cucumber just tasted like a carbonated cucumber to me.

So I wonder if this is going to be the next big thing in fruit flavoring…

  4. I saw it in the story today and passed. But I like the Cucumber one quite a bit. Maybe I’ll just wait for the next vegetable theme to come out. I think there could be some synergy in the combination of carbonation and Halepeno peppers.

Alicia! Great to hear that. I really can’t wait to try it. I’d heard it was a citrus kind of thing.

Joe – You are the first person I’ve heard say the cucumber one was good. I wouldn’t be surprised if some habanero pepper flavored foods and drinks come out in Japan in the summer.

  6. I am trying it right now. I really like it. I has a light citrus flavor, it does not overpower the taste. Love the art work on the bottle also. Very eye catching and looks like it just in time for the World Cup. I was also a fan of the Shiso Pepsi also.

  7. I just bought it, and thought it would be a wild thing, but when i tasted it, it tasted like nothing.

I’m hearing a lot of mixed reviews, people who liked it or didn’t think much of it… still surprised about Joe above who liked the cucumber pepsi. I hope pepsi continues to experiment out there… maybe taking over some of the flavors that Japanese local sodas have sometimes… Yuzu Pepsi would be a hit!

  9. i just bought mine and i’m drinking it now.. it has this distinct taste that i can’t explain.. it kinda just tastes pepsi mixed with water, and it kinda has a hint of grape in it.. but i like it.. i’ve been looking for the cucumber and azuki ones but i haven’t been able to find it.. does anyone know where i can find them in japan? thanks!

  10. Sorry emily. Limited time flavors are just that, limited time only! They came out for only one summer, and are not likely to ever be repeated again.

  11. Emily, if you are very very lucky, there may be some on Yahoo Japan Auctions, or some collector may have some stored away somewhere. It would be nice if Pepsi made some of these limited time offers regularly occurring drinks… though I suspect that if they had sold better, they might have been released again.

I’ve searched before on auctions and haven’t been able to find any of these. You might have better luck with the limited time only Kit Kats. There is an Azuki version that is not quite so elusive.
